I was thinking about what I wanted to express for this morning's blog when a song from the Broadway play and movie, "Auntie Mame", magically popped into my head. I haven't thought about this song and it's powerful message in years yet here it was, right there, the words ringing louder and stronger beckoning me to share them with you. I've learned to listen to that intuitive voice so you'll find the poignant lyrics to "Open A New Window" below. May they guide you as you masterfully create your artistic expression and life experience.
My favorite version of this movie was filmed in 1958 and starred Rosalind Russell in the title role.
Mame: (to her nephew Patrick)
Open a new window,
Open a new door,
Travel a new highway,
That's never been tried before;
Before you find you're a dull fellow,
Punching the same clock,
Walking the same tight rope
As everyone on the block.
The fellow you ought to be is three dimensional,
Soaking up life down to your toes,
Whenever they say you're slightly unconventional,
Just put your thumb up to your nose.
And show 'em how to dance to a new rhythm,
Whistle a new song,
Toast with a new vintage,
The fizz doesn't fizz too long.
There's only one way to make the bubbles stay,
Simply travel a new high way,
Dance to a new rhythm,
Open a new window ev'ry day!
If you follow your Auntie Mame
I'll make this vow, my little love,
That on the last day of your life
You'll be smiling the same young smile
You're smiling now, my little love,
If you wake up ev'ry mornin'
And you pull aside the shutter,
And you promise me that these'll be
The first words that you utter...
Open a new window,
Open a new door,
Travel a new highway,
That's never been tried before,
Before you find you're a dull fellow,
Punching the same clock,
Walking the same tight rope
As everyone on the block.
The fellow you ought to be is three dimensional,
Soaking up life down to your toes,
Whenever they say you're slightly unconventional,
Just put your thumb up to your nose.
And show 'em how to dance to a new rhythm,
Whistle a new song,
Toast with a new vintage,
The fizz doesn't fizz too long.
There's only one way to make the bubbles stay,
Simply travel a new high way,
Dance to a new rhythm,
Whistle a new love song,
Toast with a new vintage,
Open a new window ev'ry day!

Discover Your Muse: Intuition
“The only real valuable thing is intuition.” - Albert Einstein
Everyone was born with the magical power of intuition. Intuition is a clear flow of information that is available to you that is aligned with you highest path and purpose. Intuition is one of the most amazing resources at your disposal. Heeding the wisdom of your intuition will help you avoid roadblocks and unwanted detours as you create your life experience. So why do so many people either ignore or throw their intuition, that gut instinct, down the proverbial garbage disposal? What makes a person go against intuition, their 'better instincts' in favor of another choice that never results in a good outcome?
“I feel there are two people inside me - me and my intuition. If I go against her, she'll screw me every time, and if I follow her, we get along quite nicely.” - Kim Basinger
What some people refer to as 'me' is not really who they are. The 'me' they refer to is that monkey mind of thoughts and beliefs that hold you back from expressing your highest potential. That monkey mind is your well-meaning yet woefully misguided Inner Critic.
Your intuition is a reflection of your higher self, your soul, or what I playfully call the Wizard Within.
Review the events of your life. Do you remember times when you had an intuitive insight that what you were about to do wasn't a good choice? Did you go ahead and act on that choice anyway? What was the result? Was there a time when you listened to and acted upon that calm gut instinct? What was the resulting experience?
It is important to note that there is a clear distinction between a calm, knowing intuitive thought and a thought based in fear and self-doubt. The latter will not feel good. Instead of a clear gut feeling your will feel a little sick to your stomach, frightened. Pay attention to how you feel to determine whether you are paying attention to the fearful Inner Critic or the intuitive Wizard Within.
“You must train your intuition - you must trust the small voice inside you which tells you exactly what to say, what to decide” - Ingrid Bergman
Now that you are mindfully aware of the power of intuition that is your birthright you have a higher level of responsibility for the consequences of your choices. Your intuition will always tell you clearly that any given circumstance is not in alignment with your truth, your highest good. Sometimes what your intuition tells you to do is not the easiest choice. It is at that moment that some people chose to listen to the Inner Critic who offers a path of least resistance, a choice that is easier, less 'scary'.
Tapping into your intuition to weigh in on your choices and decisions takes guts. Perhaps that's why the voice of your intuition, your inspiration is called a gut instinct.
“You have to leave the city of your comfort and go into the wilderness of your intuition. What you'll discover will be wonderful. What you'll discover is yourself.” - Alan Alda
When you were born you tapped into your intuition effortlessly. Constantly paying attention to the inner wisdom of your higher self you playfully explored your new environment. You learned and grew at an amazing speed. However, as your world expanded you began to seek guidance from external resources rather than by tapping into your intuition. Most children are not taught to rely on the wisdom and knowledge of their higher self. Instead, they are taught that they don't know much of anything yet and must rely upon the wisdom of other people, other external resources. As these children grow up they forget that there is an infinite stream of knowledge and guidance already at their fingertips. Even children are aware of this intuitive resource they often ignore it in favor of the "should do and think" guidance of others.
"Listen to your intuition. It will tell you everything you need to know." - Anthony J D'Angelo
The well-meaning wisdom of others often is the collective voice of the fears and self-doubts of the conditioned spirit. Often this advice is centered upon what cannot be done instead of what can be. This 'play it safe' mentality is the embodiment of the Inner Critic. The Inner Critic is very confused about your truth and the truth of what it fears. It is not in alignment with your purpose, your passion, and will drown out the voice of your intuition as a result of this fear.
The flow of information that is in alignment with your truth and your passions is available to you at all times. All you have to do to access this powerful asset is to ask what your higher being want in a particular situation. Center yourself, perhaps with a little deep and slow breathing, to quiet the chatterbox Inner Critic. Out of the stillness will come the voice of your intuition, your muse.
"Spend time every day listening to what your muse is trying to tell you." - Barb Miller, Author

Life is Magical, How to Inspire your Inner Magician
"In a way, we are magicians. We are alchemists, sorcerers and wizards. We are a very strange bunch. But there is great fun in being a wizard." - Billy Joel
Life is indeed a magic show; a circus of performers each creating their own experience and inspiring an experience for others. As I was thinking about this, I found this poem by Jane Roberts, written in 1979. In it, she reminds us that we have the power to create any experience we want to have in life. We are given the tools and talent to express our full creative potential. Yet, many people live a life of quiet desperation. Their story is left untold; their song unsung. Why is that? They've forgotten their gift of magic; they've forgotten who they are.
Magic Show
- Jane Roberts
What magicians we all are,
turning darkness into light,
transforming invisible atoms
into dazzling theater
of the world,
pulling objects,
(people as well
as rabbits)
out of secret
microscopic closets,
turning winter into summer,
making a palmful of moments
disappear through time's trap door.
We learned the methods
so long ago
that they're unconscious,
and we've hypnotized ourselves
into believing
that we're the audience,
so I wonder where we served
our apprenticeship.
Under what master magicians did we learn
to form reality
so smoothly that we forgot to tell ourselves
the secret?
"Inspiration may be a form of superconsciousness, or perhaps of subconsciousness––I wouldn’t know. But I am sure it is the antithesis of self-consciousness.’" — Aaron Copeland
Many artists - actors, musicians, writers, painters, etc. - will tell you that their art is delivered though them, not of them. I saw a documentary about Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers where Tom Petty was asked how he wrote hit song after hit song. He paused and slowly replied that he didn't know how he wrote hit song after hit song. I'm paraphrasing; he continued to say that he didn't want to know the how of it. Knowing how might jinx the process. He said that he sits down to write and the song just spills out onto the page; he is merely the facilitator of the creation.
Think of a child playing alone or with friends. They use their creative and wild imagination to fill their time with great adventure and make-believe experiences. As the child grows older he is taught to act "like an adult". Adults have tuck away much of their imaginative adventures and make-believe dreams to fit into an expectation of who they should be, what they should do, and what they must have. If children play then adults must work and work cannot be play. This is the thinking of the woefully misguided Inner Critic.
"The creation of something new is not accomplished by the intellect but by the play instinct acting from inner necessity. The creative mind plays with the objects it loves. "- Carl Gustav Jung
When you get out of your own way, let go of expectations, fear of judgment and self-doubt of your own abilities you open yourself up for the magical moments of your life. You are willing and ready to receive the inner inspiration and guidance that, when acted upon, create your miracles. I encourage you to give yourself permission to play, to dream, to act silly or a bit wonky. I mean, really, haven't you often just wanted to let loose and act like a joyful playful child again? Respond to your innermost desires and calling with renewed enthusiasm. Do something you've never done before yet wanted to. You'll be ok. If you skin your knee, you'll heal - as you've healed many times before. Who knows, you may create a Magic Kingdom!
"When you create you get a little endorphin rush. Why do you think Einstein looked like that?" - Robin Williams

Creative Empowerment: 6 Steps to Shape Your Life
You create your life as an artist uses color. There is no experience that you cannot change. In this miraculous life you are given the gift of a creative being. And with this gift that is your birthright you create your reality according to your beliefs. It is your creative energy that makes your worldly experience. The only limitations to what you can create are within the beliefs you hold.
You create your life through the inner power of your being. This creative power is, and always has been, within you. Affirm this magical power of beingness and use your creative abilities with understanding abandon. Honor your self as you move through your life and create your experiences.
Trust in the destiny and the state of grace in the person that you are. Even if you feel lost at times or have difficulties trust and believe in your powerful ability to create lemonade out of your lemons. Trust your inner self. You can't go through life not liking, rejecting or even fearing who you are and expect to grow spiritually and creatively. A life filled with rich color, beauty, energy and fulfillment begins with a very simple and important step. That first step determines which road you travel, what you create, for your life experience. Will you create your most delicious imaginings or will you create struggle and disappointment? If you want experience what you long for, what calls to you as a creative being, then that first step must be one of affirming who you are as an individual, your truth, personal boundaries and passions.
You make your own reality. You choose the colors, the textures and the artistic style that is the canvas of your life. You are constantly dipping your brush into your palate, the colors of which are based on what you believe about yourself, the world, and other people. How you arrange those colors on this metaphorical canvas are also based on these same beliefs. If you don't like the image you are creating, you must change you colors and arrangement. Using the same color arrangements over and over again that create what you don't like over and over again will never produce the creative expression you are reaching for.
Your beliefs follow you and shape your experience. Period. If you believe that you don't have the talent to create anything new and innovative, you won't. If you believe that you have to have money to make money, you'll never make any money if you don't have any right now. If you believe critics who tell you that you just don't have what it takes to make it then you'll never make it. Belief systems, the egoic programming that runs you (or what I lovingly call the Inner Critic) loves to be right. So, it is constantly on the look out for experiences that prove the belief that is holding you back. And where it can't find evidence, it will create the experience in the form of self-sabotage.
If you think that you might be running some of this buggy programming and have affirmed that this Inner Critic holds the power to create your life experience instead of you it is time to debug and disarm the thoughts and beliefs that aren't working for you. Here's a little formula that will help you change the colors of your life experience.
1. Be mindful.
Notice the thoughts and beliefs you hold. Notice that self-talk chatter. Pay special attention to thoughts that limit you in any way.
2. According to Whom?
When you identify a statement that undermines what you want to experience ask, "According to Whom?" Who, specifically, made this statement? "They" is not an answer. If you accept the source, whatever the source may be, as the definitive authority without question then you have turned over your power to that individual or thing. In any area of your life where you have let go of your personal power you will find struggle and dissatisfaction. Period.
3. Is it True? How do I know it's true?
Ask yourself if the belief is true. Do you know, with certainty, that this belief is true? Absolutely?
4. Look for evidence that supports the opposite of this belief.
For example, if you believe that you have to have money to make money look for evidence of people who started out with nothing and amassed fortunes. If you believe that you'll never make it at whatever you aspire to do, look at all the people who have made it. If they can, so can you. The difference between someone who has made it and someone who hasn't is the knowingness and firm belief that they would make it. It's really as simple as that.
5. Create a new belief based on this new evidence.
Based on the new evidence that you have found that proves that the old belief you held isn't absolute and isn't really true. Reframe the belief into one that supports you. For example, lots of artists have become famous, successful and rich. I no longer believe that as an artist, I'll never make any money.
6. Who would you be, what would you have, what would you do without this belief?
Imagine what your life would be like without this belief. How would it be different? How will you feel? What would you be doing? What will you have in your life that you do not have now? You can be, do and have all that you imagine by letting go of the beliefs that are holding you back from that experience.
You can use this formula to examine any area of your life that is not working for you. Explore the beliefs that are creating the experiences that you do not wish to have. Create new beliefs.
What colors will you paint on your canvas of life?
"If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them." - Henry David Thoreau

Inspiring Athletes: "Don't Make Me Cry, Roy"
I spent a delightful weekend reading Roy Firestone's book, "Don't Make Me Cry, Roy - Adventures in Interviewing". Roy is a known sportscaster famous for his poignant personal interviews with over 5,000 sports stars and other celebrities. You might have seen him as himself in the movie "Jerry Maguire" where he brings Cuba Gooding Jr.'s character to crocodile tears during a televised interview.
I am not a sports fan. I had no idea what teams were playing in the Superbowl. So, why was I reading Roy's book? Roy has the unprecedented ability to get into and reveal the mindset of his guest and deliver their stories in an honest and humorous tone. What makes these people champions and what makes them often crash and burn in the tabloids is fascinating to me. Roy's book delivers humorous personal anecdotes and touching emotional stories that are 'offered up from the heart, and from the best seat in the house'.
Roy also describes his own personal journey as a sports fan, world-class interviewer, performer and father as he turned his dreams into reality and was inspired by others along the way. Roy discovered that the life of an athlete and his own life paralleled in that it wasn't just about perspiration, it was about inspiration too. He was inspired by those who triumphed over enormous odds in their professional sports careers as well as their personal lives. He learned valuable lessons from those who seemingly had it all and threw it away with inflated egos, unsportsmanlike behavior and bad judgement. Perhaps the most profound stories were the ones where a fallen superstar picked himself up to win the next chapter in his life. Yes, some of our coveted sports giants went from knucklehead jerk status to hero and left a legacy in the inspiration they provided off the field.
Here are a few examples from the book:
Magic Johnson - Went from super basketball star to cast-out tagged with the stigma of A.I.D.S. and then beloved philanthropic entrepreneur. Magic said to Roy, "What A.I.D.S. taught me was to love your dreams more. The biggest thing I dreamed as a kid was I always wanted to be viewed as a businessman, someone who could see something and make it happen. So when I talk about rebuilding inner cities, and people told me there was no money and no money to do it, I said we had to do it, we need to put some pride in this community."
And he did it. He built theaters, franchised stores, restaurants and fitness centers. He built growth where there was none, created jobs where there was none and opened up possibilities for people who had none before. This is Magic's legacy. He continues to fulfill his wildest dreams by discovering the gift in what is viewed as a death sentence for many. Magic is the shining example that dreams can always come true if you believe - believe in your self.
Andre Agassi speaking to the crowd on his 2006 U.S. Open defeat:
"The scoreboard said I lost today but the scoreboard doesn't say what I have found. And over the last 21 years I have found loyalty. You pulled for me on the court and also in life. I've found inspiration. You have willed me to succeed even in my lowest moments. And I've found generosity. You have given me your shoulders to stand on to reach for my dreams - dreams I could never have reached without you. Over the last 21 years I have found you and I will take you, and the memory of you, with me for the rest of my life. Thank you."
This statement was from that once very public jerk of a trouble maker, a spoiled punk of a kid on and off the court. Tennis may have delivered a fortune to Agassi but the gift that mattered, that influenced his life more than anything else, was the lesson he learned about compassion. Since his 2006 defeat, Agassi's legacy has been his compassion and philanthropic endeavors for underprivileged children.
This is just a small glimpse into the treasure chest of inspiring and heart-wrenching stories told by Roy Firestone, the guy sitting front-row center to the lives, loves and losses of giants on and off the game. The real champions are the ones who scored biggest in life. I encourage you to pick up a copy today at Amazon.com.
